Ratio: 1:15 (Coffee: Water)
To start, we recommend a 1:15 ratio of coffee to water. This is 60g (approx. 12 TBSP) to 900g of water for a large (8 cup) French Press
Grind: Coarse (Sea Salt)
The consistency should be similar to sea salt. Since the metal screen on the plunger will allow fine grounds through, a coarse grind is necessary.
Coffee we enjoy brewed using a French Press:
How to Brew: Load coffee, Pour water into the container, Brew
- Preheat the French Press (glass brewing container) with hot water
- Weigh out whole bean coffee: 60g (approx. 12 TBSP) for a large (8 cup) French Press
- Heat 900g (32oz or 4 cups) filtered water for brewing to 205°F
- Grind your preweighed coffee–> sea salt consistency
- Dump out water from your preheated French Press.
- Add your freshly ground Dynamite coffee into the French Press.
- Begin to pour hot water over your coffee grounds. Only fill halfway!! Begin timer for 4 minutes.
- After 1 minute, stir the “bloom” (or top layer) with a spoon using a gentle folding action and pour the remaining water.
- Place the lid on the brewer
- When the timer goes off, gently press the plunger down halfway and serve!
General Tips:
- Why push the plunger only halfway? The screen on the plunger is meant to act more as a filter than a method to compress the grounds at the bottom. Hence, we use a coarse grind setting. This is a common mistake, and often results in fine particles being released into the brewed coffee.
- Why break the bloom? This is a controversial step in many French Press brew guides. However, it’s essential for two reasons. First, it creates a more consistent cup across multiple brews. This may not seem like much, but when trying to dial in grind or ratios, it is key. Second, it gives your cup more complexity and body.
