Ratio: 1:8 (Coffee: Water)
To start, we recommend a 1:8 ratio of coffee to water. This is 200g of coffee (approx. 3 3/4 cups) to 1600mL of water (approx. 7cups). This will make roughly 15 cups. Be mindful that this ready-to-drink cold brew and not a concentrate. With a concentrate, you’d need to “cut” or water it down to get the correct drinking ratio. Here, all you’ll need to do is brew and add milk or ice to taste.
Grind: Coarse (Pretzel Salt)
The consistency should be similar to Pretzel salt. In other words, your coarsest grind setting is a great place to start.
Coffee we enjoy brewed as cold brew:

- While there are special containers for brewing cold brew, like The Toddy System you probably have a large container at home you can use. You’ll also need a way to strain your cold brew. This can be achieved by placing grounds in a cheesecloth bag or by simply pouring the final mixture through a fine strainer. We think that either of these methods are fine, but having all your equipment beforehand will ensure a smooth process.
- Now lets get into the brewing: Weigh out whole bean coffee: 200g of coffee (approx. 3 3/4 cups) and grind to a pretzel salt consistency or your coarsest grind that your grinder allows.
- Next, take your large container and add your freshly ground coffee.
- Pour in your 1600g of room temperature water (approx. 7cups) and leave it in the fridge for 18-24 hours. Play around with time to get your perfect cold brew.
- Finally, strain your concentrate by pouring through a fine mesh strainer. If put into a filter or bag, then simply remove the bag.
- Add milk and/ or ice to taste, and you have a ready-to-drink cold brew!
General tips:
- Don’t overthink this one! Cold brew is a great way to enjoy your favorite coffee. We often experiment using different coffee combinations or brew times. Worst comes to worst, you end up with some grounds in your cup. Have fun and try something new!
- This can be a great addition to any off-grind activities. Whether you’re backpacking/camping or going away for the weekend, cold brew can be the perfect addition if brewed ahead of time.
Enjoy!
