Sumatra Mandheling

In the Gayo highlands of Sumatra is a female-led cooperative dedicated to producing 100% certified organic, shade grown coffee.  Their beans are bold and heavy-bodied. Earthy, punchy, and lingering, with flavors reminiscent of sandalwood and dark chocolate.

Tasting and Roaster Notes

“A classic Sumatran coffee is appealing for it’s heavy mouthfeel, chocolate and earthy flavors. It also tends to have a lower perceived acidity, which adds to the appeal. We roast this coffee into second crack to add roast character to the chocolate and earth flavors. While not roasted particularly dark, there is a certain smokey tobacco quality that comes out. This is a great coffee to drink with food. It won’t dominate your palate or overshadow any other tastes and aromas.”

Meet The Farmers

The Koperasi Pedagang Kopi Ketiara is a women-run
cooperative that has over 890 grower-members. The
Ketiara Cooperative was started in 2008 by Ibu Rahmah,
the current chairwoman, who had operated and managed
her family’s coffee business for 20 years-purchasing cherries,
processing the green, and selling to local traders. The passionate
commitment of the women managers to have all members
working together in support of coffee production has enabled
Ketiara to expand and become an important supplier to
larger coffee traders in Medan, the capital of North Sumatra.
The cooperative members voted to become organic and
Fairtrade certified in 2012, making a commitment to use these
proceeds to create programs for health, education, and public
infrastructure projects that will benefit all co-op members.
